Current Series Big Idea

Session I (Aug 15): Speak No Evil

Big Idea: God wants us to be salt in the lives of those around us.

Summary:

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told his followers that were to be like SALT, and when He talked about SALT, he talked about salt that loses its saltiness, or becomes neutral, like the three monkeys.  There is a reason why Jesus picked the image of salt: salt adds flavor, salt is appealing, salt makes people thirsty. Being SALT is the opposite of being neutral or being negative.

Session 2 (Aug 22): See No Evil

Big Idea:  God wants us to be a light to others in dark places.

Summary:

Jesus talked about salt, and he talked about light.  As Christ-followers, we are to be people of light, and to understand light, we have to understand "good".  The "good" deeds/works that people see in us can point them to God.  Good is an important biblical word, not just a general positive word.  It means "just as God meant for it to be".  Being a Christian is not just about doing good deeds.  Its about being light in dark places.  As Christians, we need to be seen in a different light among nonbelievers: we should not just be seen as being nice or doing nice things for people.  We need to shed light on the way the world was meant to be and the good that it is meant to be.

Session 3 (Aug 29): Hear No Evil

Big Idea:  Hear what Jesus says and put it into practice.

Summary:

Some warnings are just stupid and useless.  But some warnings need to be heeded.  Jesus wraps up the Sermon on the Mount, His inaugural teaching on what it looks like to be His people, with a warning.  He talks about doing more than just hearing what He says--which is the difference between building your house on sand vs. rock.
